Talented Virginia RB/LB Trades Gridiron For Track Full-Time

Another talented two-way athlete is giving up a future in football for the chance to see what he's made of in track and field.

Dumfries Potomac (Va.) High rising senior Donovan Louis made the decision this past spring, before he won two Virginia High School League (VHSL) titles in the long jump (24-8 ac) and 100m (10.66) and finished sixth in the shot put and seventh in the 200m.

Louis qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in both the long jump and 100m.

The three-year varsity football player made the decision to switch paths even after schools such as Old Dominion, Virginia and UNC Charlotte offered scholarships at the next level.

But Louis cited his love for track and field as the main reason for transition.

"It's a big commitment," Louis told InsideNova.com"A big jump. But my gut is telling me to do it."

Louis won the long jump and 55-meter dash at the VHSL Class 5A indoor meet in February as well.

He certainly has the marks and times that could translate at the next level. He's run 6.39 in the 55m, thrown 43 feet in the shot put, jumped an all conditions 24-8 in the LJ, ran an all conditions 10.51 in the 100m and all conditions 21.79 in the 200m.

His all conditions long jump effort is US No. 8 and within Virginia he's No. 3 in the 100m and No. 16 in the 200m.
