WIAC Indoor Championships Results
Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team captured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship Saturday night in UW-Stout's Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles finished with 140.0 team points while UW-Whitewater was second with 108.5. UW-Eau Claire placed third (108.0) and UW-Oshkosh was fourth (98.5) followed by UW-Platteville (78.0), UW-Stout (63.0), UW-Stevens Point (52.0), UW-River Falls (50.0) and UW-Superior (4.0).
It is UW-L's 11th consecutive indoor conference title. The Eagles have won a conference record 37 overall indoor championships in school history, including 21 of the last 23.
Isaac Vazquez won his second conference title Saturday with a victory in the triple jump (50-6 1/4). He captured his second straight WIAC title in the long jump (24-3 1/2) Friday. Vazquez set a conference record in winning the triple jump Saturday, breaking the record of UW-L's
Dean Cash in 1990 (50-3 3/4). Vazquez became the first student-athlete to win the triple jump for the Eagles since
Jesse Dengsavang took the conference title in 2007.
Vazquez was also named to the 2012 WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Sean Royer captured the 800-meter run (1:54.88) Saturday, becoming the first league champion from UW-L in the event since
Craig Poshepney in 1989.
UW-L's
Andy Grossman placed third in the heptathlon (4,808) Saturday.
Other top individual finishes in the field events for the Eagles Saturday included
Brett Davis placing seventh (46-1 1/4) and
Daniel Petkau 10th (44-2 1/2) in the triple jump while
John Cooper was seventh in the weight throw (60-6 1/2). UW-L's
Nick Stone was 10th in the high jump (6-4).
On the track, UW-L's
Alex Koenen was fifth in the 60 (6.96) and 200 (22.47) meter dashes.
Jared Sitte placed seventh (7.01) and
Troy Brooks eighth (7.04) in the 60-meter dash while
Tyson Young was seventh (50.19) in the 400-meter dash.
Along with Royer's first-place finish in the 800-meter run, the Eagles'
Eric Smits was fifth (1:56.80) overall.
Andrew Rohlman placed fifth (4:18.33) in the mile run while
Josh Kaul was fourth (8:37.15),
David Stilin sixth (8:41.31) and
Andrew Heinritz seventh (8:41.60) in the 3,000-meter run.
Adam Nichols placed fourth (8.36) and
Joe DeRosier eighth (8.47) in the 60-meter hurdles.
In the relays, UW-L's
Nick Tehan, Young,
Eric Scholl and
Jamie Bottcher were fifth (3:22.09) in the 4x400-meter relay while Tehan, Young,
Clark Lundquist and
Alex Jelich were sixth (1:31.78) in the 4x200.
UW-L returns to action Friday, March 2 at the UW-Madison Invitational at 5 p.m.
