UW-L Ties for Fifth at NCAA Championships

Vazquez, Hoeschen and Novak Earn Honors

Grinnell, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team finished in a tie for fifth-place Saturday night at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Indoor Championships in the Charles Benson Bear Recreation and Athletic Center.  The championships were hosted by Grinnell College (Iowa). The Eagles finished with 27.0 team points while North Central College (Ill.) won the national title with 48.0 points.  UW-Eau Claire was second (37.0), UW-Oshkosh third (32.0) and UW-Stout fourth (28.0).  The University of St. Thomas (Minn.) tied for fifth with UW-L.

McMurry University (Texas) placed seventh (25.0) while UW-Whitewater was eighth (22.0) and Bates College (Maine) and UW-Stevens Point tied for ninth (20.0).  A total of 60 team scores points.

In Saturday's action, Isaac Vazquez, Andy Novak and Aric Hoeschen each earned indvidual All-America honors.  Vazquez earned his second NCAA III All-America honor of the championships Saturday with a third-place finish in the triple jump (49-6 1/2).  He was also third in the long jump (23-8 3/4) Friday night.  Vazquez has now earned five career indoor All-America awards.  He was third in the long and triple jumps last season and placed eighth in the triple jump in 2010. 

Novak earned his first career indoor All-America award after placing fifth in the shot put (57-0 3/4) Saturday. 

Hoeschen picked up his fourth career indoor All-America accolade Saturday with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash (49.13).  He was on the Eagles' NCAA DIvision III champion 4x400-meter relay and fourth-place distance medley relay in 2011. Hoeschen was on the second-place 4x400-meter relay in 2010.

In other action Saturday, Andy Grossman finished ninth in the heptathlon (4,726 points).

UW-L opens its 2012 outdoor season April 7 at the Wartburg College (Iowa) Select Meet.
