Men's Track & Field Team Wins Esten Challenge

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field squad won the Phil Esten Challenge Friday night at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  The Eagles finished with 222.0 team points while UW-Oshkosh was second with 170.5.  A total of nine teams competed.  Five individuals captured titles Friday for UW-L with Terrence Thigpen winning the 200-meter dash (21.52 and Mark Punzenberger the 10,000-meter run (30:57.52).  Isaac Vazquez won the long jump (24-2 1/2), Brett Davis the triple jump (46-4 1/2) and Andy Novak the shot put (58-6).

UW-L captured the 4x100-meter relay (41.98) and placed second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:20.05).

Other top finishers on the track Friday included Garrett Kerska second (3:57.33), David Stilin third (3:58.08) and Zach Wilhelmy fifth (4:00.13) in the 1,500-meter run.  Nathan Routhier was second (15:16.50) in the 5,000-meter run.

Adam Nichols was third (15.01) and Joe DeRosier fifth (15.03) in the 110-meter hurdles while Clark Lundquist finished third (10.92) and Jared Sitte fifth (11.01) in the 100-meter dash.  Eric Smits placed third (1:55.22) in the 800-meter run.

Alex Jelich was fifth (57.07) in the 400-meter hurdles and Nick Tehan fifth (22.43) in the 200-meter dash.

Josh Dedering finished fifth (31:42.27) in the 10,000-meter run.

In the field events, Tony Bilderback finished second (46-3 1/4), Lundquist third (45-1 1/2) and Daniel Petkau fourth (43-8 1/2) in the triple jump while Christopher Haase placed second (23-9 1/2) and Troy Brooks third (23-8) in the long jump.

UW-L's David Pergande finished second (16-0 3/4) in the pole vault while Jeffrey Hill and Jeremiah Burish tied for fourth (15-3).

Alex Zart placed third (162-10) in the discus throw while Andy Grossman was fourth (165-5) in the javelin throw and Nick Stone fourth (6-2 3/4) in the high jump.

Adam Poellinger was third (52-11) in the shot put.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 21 at the Winona State University (Minn.) Warrior Invitational.
