Jasmine Moore Wins National Title & Looks Ahead To More Records

By Cory Mull,  MileSplit

Jasmine Moore wore the orange and black colors of Motor City Track Club on Tuesday inside Eastern Michigan's Rynearson Stadium, and for a moment it seemed as if this was always the way it was supposed to be.

Her extended family watched from the stands, as did her temporary coaches and teammates, and no one was too surprised when Moore dominated in the long jump, winning an AAU Junior Olympic Games title for the second time in three years with a mark of 19 feet, 2 inches.

But it didn't just happen with the snap of a finger. The journey, in fact, was years in the making.

After the family's move from Detroit, Michigan, to Kentucky in 2005, and then ultimately to Texas in 2007, Mooore never got a chance to compete in the region in which her parents, Earl and Trinette, earned success at multiple levels.

She was too young.

Up until Tuesday, the freshmen and sophomore class record holder in the triple jump never even competed inside the state, which meant that her mother was the family's all-time leader in the long jump with a mark of 19-8.

Jasmine finally got her shot on Tuesday -- though, as her mom may attest, she still didn't get the family record.

But she made up for it with a title.

And on Thursday, Moore will go for an AAU national record of 42-1.75, last achieved in 2000, when she steps to the line for the girls age 15-16 triple jump.

Above, watch the feature on Moore, who reflected on the experience of competing for her family's storied track and field team.
