After a long calendar year which included a national cross country title, national indoor titles in the 2-mile and DMR and a third straight New York State Championship in the 3K, North Rockland High School junior and defending Gatorade National Athlete of the Year Katelyn Tuohy has decided to shut her season down.

Tuohy's coaches, cross country head coach Brian Diglio and winter and spring track and field coach Kyle Murphy -- both of which work with Tuohy throughout the year -- confirmed this news via text.

"We have decided that it is in Katelyn's best interest to shut her down for the rest of the season," Diglio said.

Tuohy was entered in the 1-mile and 2-mile ahead of New Balance Nationals this weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina, and up until recently had hopes of hitting the 'A' standard for the women's 5K ahead of the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. The 'A' standard in the 5K is 15:22.00.

Instead, Tuohy will take a break ahead of a long cross country season -- where a foundation typically forms in the summer months -- as she looks to finish out a remarkable and record-breaking high school career in 2019-2020.

Tuohy, who won two National Gatorade Athlete of the Year honors in 2017-2018 and won another National Gatorade Athlete of the Year this cross country season, has long said her hopes are toward making a run at qualifying for the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials in 2020, and this break -- while an adjustment -- won't change that aspiration.

She is coming off her third straight state title in the 3,000 meters at the New York Track and Field Championships, where she ran a US No. 2 time of 9:21.90.

While it was 13 seconds off her best of 9:09.71 during the 2018 season, Tuohy's focus over the last few weeks has also been balanced with work in arduous Advanced Placement course at North Rockland.

A year ago Tuohy broke the national record in the 1-mile at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in 4:33.87.

This season she has posted a US No. 1 time of 9:53.30 in the 3,200m, a US No. 2 time in the 3,000m, a US No. 6 time in the 1-mile (4:46.24) and a US No. 3 effort in the 1,500m (4:25.21).

Following her win in the 3K at states she told her hometown newspaper, The Journal News, "I kind of need a down year if I want to accomplish what I want next year."
