SAN TAN VALLEY, ARIZONA -- On a cool night in the desert, Center Grove High School's (IN) Ty Garrett made a statement.

Just a freshman, Garrett clocked a 9:08.87 to take the win in the field of young up-and-coming distance stars. His time ranks US No. 6 all-time for freshman according to the MileSplit database.

The performance putts Garrett just ahead of Manchester High School's (CT) Aidan Puffer, who made a statement of his own during the 2019 outdoor season running 9:10.13 for 3200m and setting the national record for the 5K in 14:47.66.

Garrett also won his heat of the 1600m on Friday night running 4:22.41.

Rounding out the field in the 3200m was Cheyenne Mountain High School (CO) sophomore Erik Le Roux who after leading for most of the race ended up having to settle for second in 9:09.34. A-D-M High School's (IA) Nate Mueller would round out the top three in the field finishing at 9:10.11.
