UW-Oshkosh Women Join Men Atop DIII Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – The UW-Oshkosh women have vaulted past defending champion Wartburg to claim the No. 1 spot in this week’s DIII U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Computer Team Rankings, joining their men’s program counterparts atop the charts and marking the first time in the history of the DIII indoor rankings that the same school has claimed the top spot on both the men’s and women’s list.

Riding the exceptional mile performance of DIII Women’s National Athlete of the Week Christy Cazzola (4:44.73) and DIII-leading marks from Breanna Strupp (50-7¼/15.42m) and Samantha Loew (59-11¼/18.27m) in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, the Titans gained 13.52 team points from a week ago to post this week’s division-best score of 163.42. This marks the first time the UW-Oshkosh women have been ranked No. 1 since its national championship in 2011.

Former No. 1 Wartburg dropped 6.24 points to a second-ranked score of 160.26. Illinois Wesleyan (103.26) moved up to third in the rankings behind the second-fastest 400 (56.56) in DIII from former National Athlete of the Week honoree Tara Clemens, who also boasts the division’s fastest 800 (2:10.48) and second-fastest mile (4:59.69) marks this season. Displaced by IWU is Williams (83.91), which drops to fourth, and Methodist stands pat at No. 5 to round out the top five.

The entirety of the men’s top five from the previous rankings remained static, with UW-La Crosse chipping away at UW-Oshkosh’s hold on the top spot. The Titans remain on top for a second straight week with a score of 165.80, gaining 4.4 primarily from a pair of top 10 shot put performances, including the division-leader from former National Athlete of the Week recipient Nick Baatz (61-2¼/18.65m).

UW-La Crosse improved by 9.23 points this week for a total of 156.55, driven by Alex Koenen’s DIII-best 60 meters performance at 6.85. Defending national champion North Central (Ill.) checks in at No. 3 (133.43), UW-Whitewater at No. 4 (130.36) and St. Thomas (Minn.) at No. 5 (110.13).

The National Computer Team Rankings project how a team will finish in a National Championship Meet setting, rather than a triangular or dual. The rankings are compiled from meet data in the 2012-13 season, but also from returners from the 2011-12 to take into account what a roster might look like should all student-athletes perform at their top level.

The next round of computer rankings will be released February 6. The 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held March 8-9 in Naperville, Ill.
