Saucony Flo50 Summer Training Blog: Seth Hirsch

Week 1: 7/11-7/17

Had a really solid week if training this week. Was out in Boston and Connecticut for family vacation from Monday to Friday and then ran a road race Saturdaymorning. Was great to get to run some different places and hit 70 miles for the week.

Monday- Didn't run at all Sunday as I was flying out to Boston so the first couple miles were a little rough but ended up being a really good run. Ran along the Charles River for 10 miles at 5:45 pace. In the afternoon I had a nice 20 minutes on the bike at our hotel.

Tuesday- Ran along the Charles River once again in the morning and felt very fresh. Went 8 miles at 5:40. In the afternoon I ran around the Boston Commons right by my hotel for another 4.5 miles. Started really easy on this run and finished a little faster. Was a really good day of training.

Wednesday- My legs were a little heavy for the first half of this run. I went 9 miles around 5:40 pace with 6 100 meter strides at the end. I took the afternoon off as I was traveling down to Connecticut and enjoying the beach.

Thursday- Ran along the ocean in Connecticut in the morning for 8 miles at 5:45pace. It was very humid but a really cool area to run with some good hills. In the afternoon I did 20 minutes or 4 sets of 2 min easy 1 min hard 1 min easy 1 min walk. Ended up being about 3 miles and was a good way to get my legs turned over a little before my road race. Was 90 degrees out for this but it didn't seem to affect me too much.

Friday- Ran along the ocean once again for 8 miles around 5:40 pace with 6 100 meter strides. Was very warm and humid once again and felt a little harder than it should've. I flew back to Omaha and went to the YMCA to elliptical for about 20 minutes to make sure I didn't have any jet lag for Saturday mornings race.

Saturday- Ran in a 5 mile road race that I've done the past couple years in a small town about an hour from my house. Was a flat course and had really good weather. Placed first with a 24:52 and came through the 8k in 24:44. I was battling my former teammate who is a mid 30 10k guy in college and I managed to pull ahead for the last mile.  Was a really fun race and I was extremely happy with my time considering I was right around 26 last year at the same race. Got in 8 miles total including the warmup and cool down. In the afternoon I biked 9 miles around a lake near my house where I do most of my training. Was a good way to shake out the legs from the morning race.

Sunday- Was hoping to get in a long run of 12 miles but only ended up going an hour and 10.65 miles at the lake near my house.  Was really warm and humid and I think the whole week of traveling and a hard race made my legs a little heavy. In the afternoon I did 20 minutes on the elliptical.

All in all was a really solid week of training and a good race to see where I'm at as we get closer to xc season.
