Wisconsin Middle School: April 5-12 Top Performers and Breakthroughs
Middle school athletes across Wisconsin kicked off April with a strong wave of performances. Meets like the Holmen Middle School Meet, Winona Middle School Meet #1, Pardeeville MS Invite, and Boscobel Middle School Early Bird produced both standout marks and significant personal bests.
From emerging sprint talent to rapidly improving distance runners and throwers, athletes showed early-season progress across every discipline, setting the tone for a competitive conclusion to the spring season.
Sprints
In the 100m, Roman Quackenbush (West Salem Middle School) led all boys at 12.46, while also showing versatility with a 14.15 win in the 100m hurdles and a top high jump mark. Close behind, Dyland Gonzalez (Dodgeland) went 12.80 and added a strong 26.34 showing in the 200m. On the girls side, Evelyn Larson (Fennimore) topped the standings at 13.64 and doubled back to win the Boscobel Middle School Early Bird 200m in 28.24, capping off one of the more impressive sprint doubles of the week.
Breakthrough performances added depth to the statewide equation, particularly from Alex Hernandez Hernandez (Sparta), who dropped nearly three seconds to run 14.56, and Addison Severson (West Salem Middle School), who improved to 15.09. In the 200m, large improvements came from Kyler Hellerude (Logan Middle School) (30.06) and Lucas Orville (Edgewood Campus School) (30.77), while Nahla Perl (West Salem Middle School) matched her PR with a 30.70 among the top five finishers.
The 400m showcased some of the most significant development of the week. Connor Sikora (Dodgeland) led the boys at 58.33, followed closely by a deep field hovering around the 1:00 barrier. On the girls side, Annamae Engelke (Belmont) took the top spot, running 1:08.95. The biggest breakthrough came from Logan Tomten (West Salem Middle School), who dropped over 22 seconds to 1:08.57, while Jaxon Smith (Holmen Middle School) also made a major leap to 1:08.81. For the girls, Audrey Steinborn (West Salem Middle School) and Mirren Stine (Longfellow Middle School) both posted sizable improvements while moving into competitive territory.
Distance
In the 800m, Owen Bacon (Boscobel) led the boys with a 2:27.45 performance, which also marked a significant improvement from his previous best of 2:41.84. He was joined by a competitive group including Kacen Reynolds (Prairie du Chien) and Finnley Birr (Fall River). On the girls side, Taylor Laufenberg (Melrose-Mindoro) took control running 2:35.68, just ahead of Olivia Lentscher (Central Wisconsin Christian School) (2:36.42); with both girls winning their respective meets in the event.
Breakthroughs were especially notable here, with Gavin Davey (Logan Middle School) dropping over 30 seconds to 3:21.05 and Alex Suntken (Logan Middle School) following closely behind with a 22-second improvement. For the girls, Natalie Rude (West Salem Middle School) led the PR list with a 3:07.38. The mark shaved almost 14 seconds from her previous best. Cora Droessler (Southwestern/Benton MS) and Audrey Steinborn (West Salem Middle School) also posted double-digit improvements in the 800m.
The 1600m featured some of the most competitive marks of the week. Vincent Pinch (River Ridge) led all boys, running 5:22.87 and narrowly edging out Finnley Birr (Fall River). Atley Abing (Logan Middle School) ran 5:31.46, recording one of the biggest improvements in the event - a 55 second improvement! Teammate Alden Belby (Logan Middle School) added another major drop, going 5:38.92.
On the girls side, Taylor Laufenberg completed the distance double, running 5:45.16, while a tight pack following close behind at just over six minutes. Breakthrough efforts from Finley Fernholz (Logan Middle School) and Hannah Yard (Longfellow Middle School), both near 6:00, highlighted the depth of the event.
Hurdles
On the boys side, Roman Quackenbush again stood out with a leading time of 14.15, followed by Jarell Ayed (Holmen Middle School) at 14.64. Breakthroughs came from Dawson Frauenkron (Melrose-Mindoro), who dropped nearly three seconds to 17.60, and Mason Schlueter (Sparta), who improved to 16.39 while also placing among the top performers.
The girls event was led by Lillian Oeltjen (Holmen Middle School) in 15.85, highlighting a strong showing from Holmen athletes across the board. The most significant improvement of the week came from Kinley Weir (Princeton/Green Lake), who dropped over six seconds to 24.32, one of the largest PR swings across any event.
Relays
On the boys side, Holmen Middle School led the 4x100 at 51.29, while North Crawford took the 4x400 lead in 4:25.10. West Salem and Prairie du Chien were consistent contenders across both relays.
For the girls, Holmen Middle School clocked 56.37 in the 4x100, while Central Wisconsin Christian School led the 4x400 in 4:49.86. West Salem and Dodgeland also showed strong depth with top-three finishes for the week.
Throws
In the boys shot put, Broderick Miller (West Salem Middle School) led the field with a 43-1 mark, which also represented an eight-foot improvement. He was joined by a strong group including Lupe Soto (Sparta) and Warren Peterson (Prairie du Chien). On the girls side, Lily Engle (River Ridge) dominated with a 34-4 throw, improving over nine feet.
The discus saw multiple athletes surpass the 90-foot mark on the boys side, led by Owen Bundy (Logan Middle School) at 101-9. Breakthroughs from Cole Laufenberg (Melrose-Mindoro) and Brayan Aguilar (Sparta) highlighted the rapid development in the event. For the girls, Annamae Engelke (Belmont) led at 79-3, while Gemma Desjarlais (Rio) posted a notable improvement to over 62 feet.
Jumps
In the long jump, Trenton Gohlke (Wautoma MS) led the boys with 16-8, while Tessa Luebke (West Salem Middle School) topped the girls at 14-7. Massive improvements came from Isaac Schlinker (Dodgeland) and Brylee Klueger (Dodgeland), both making improving over seven feet from previous marks.
The triple jump was led by Troy Hoffman (Central Wisconsin Christian School) at 35-1 on the boys side, with Brooklyn Walz (Longfellow Middle School) topping the girls at 30-7. Breakthroughs from Myles Barnes (Princeton/Green Lake) and Hayden Arensdorff (Southwestern/Benton MS) added depth to the event as well.
High jump saw multiple boys clear 5-2, including Roman Quackenbush (West Salem Middle School) and Kyrie Everson (Fennimore), while Heidi Lange (Belmont) and Macy Hulst (Westby) led the girls at 4-8. Notably, Elijah Fulton (Iowa-Grant) reached 5-0 after a 10-inch improvement.
In the pole vault, Michael Mezera (Prairie du Chien) and Lily Griswold (Fennimore) led their respective fields at 6-6 and 7-6, with both athletes also recording notable personal bests.
