Wisconsin Middle School Outdoors: April 20th-26th Top Performers and Breakthroughs
Wisconsin middle school athletes showed up in a big way this week at meets like the Dr. H.A. Schulz Invitational, Fall River Invite, Boyceville Middle School Meet, Columbus Middle School Track Meet, and other regional competitions.
Sprints & Hurdles
Sprint events produced some of the most significant breakthroughs of the week, especially in the 200 and 400 meters where multiple athletes made major time drops. AJ Stenger (Faith Christian Academy MS) led all 200-meter improvements with an 8.90-second drop, while Ashton Daino (Medford Middle School) also delivered standout gains in both the 100 and 200 meters, highlighted by a 7.60-second improvement in the 200.
In the 400 meters, Sydney Spaeth (Cadott MS) posted one of the largest overall drops of the week, improving by nearly 15 seconds to 1:06.81, with additional strong breakthroughs from Keegan Johnson (Deerfield/Cambridge) and Drew Murkowski (Edgar Middle School).
Coy Ramseier (Cadott MS) was one of last week's top performers, leading the 100 and 200 meters with marks of 11.55 and 23.63, while Roman Hanson (Watertown Luther Prep) topped the 400 meters in 55.52.
Lindsay Vander Galien (Randolph/Cambria-Friesland) posted the fastest 100 meters in 12.94, while Sydney Spaeth (Cadott MS) led the 200 meters at 28.38 and also added a strong 400-meter win in 1:03.77.
In the hurdles, William Manternach (Ben Franklin Junior High) stood out with a 3.46-second drop in the , with additional 100-meter hurdle improvements from Ava Anderson (Ben Franklin Junior High) and Kristyn Huenink (Randolph/Cambria-Friesland).
August Ciha (Deerfield/Cambridge) led the 100 meter hurdles with a winning time of 15.07, setting the top mark of the week. He was followed closely by Louie Spataro (Amery) in 15.35 and Aiden Feeney (Boyceville Middle School) in 15.58. In the 300 meter hurdles, Garrett Engel (Cadott MS) posted the fastest time at 46.58, narrowly ahead of teammate Saibyn Will (Cadott MS) in 46.78, while Gerrit Sjoerdsma (Randolph/Cambria-Friesland) rounded out the top group in 47.15.
Laken Aizpurua (Amery) led the girls 100-meter hurdles in 16.99, while Veronica Schroeder (Watertown Luther Prep) topped the 300-meter hurdles in 1:00.47.
Distance Events
Eli Wojcik (Ben Franklin Junior High) produced the largest single improvement of the week, dropping 37.32 seconds in the 1600 meters to go 5:13.68 - a fantastic time for a middle school athlete.
Maria Mills (Edgar Middle School) also delivered a major two-event breakthrough, improving by 36.02 seconds in the 800 meters to 3:11.54 and 14.42 seconds in the 400 meters to 1:15.25.
In the 800 meters, Joel Ogiba (Mosinee Middle School) (2:38.10) and Aidan Auer (Pacelli Catholic Middle School) (2:40.71) both posted nearly 18-second improvements.
Boston Sutliff (Boyceville Middle School) led girls' 1600-meter gains with a 30.66-second drop to a new best of 6:33.98.
Last week's results saw Griyan Hughland (Wayland Academy) sweep the girls distance events with wins in the 1600 and 3200 meters, while Luke Stern (Watertown Luther Prep) led the boys 3200 meters in 11:18.89. Norah Olson (Deerfield/Cambridge) led the girls 800 meters in 2:39.30. Jon Phelps (Cadott MS) led the boys field in the 800 in 2:14.93.
Field Events
In the throws, Ethan Luedke (Martin Luther Lutheran School) produced one of the largest improvements of the week with a 95-foot gain in the discus to 103-10, while Brody Bechel (Elmwood-Plum City) added a 12-foot shot put improvement to post a new PR of 33-6.
On the girls side, Josie Lund (Deerfield/Cambridge) highlighted the discus with a 31-foot PR to 65-2, while Morgan Bittner (Fall River) and Alyssa Bittner (Fall River) also made major strides.
In the jumps, Talon Cooley (Medford Middle School) led all improvements with a 12-foot long jump PR to a competitive 13-3.5. Additional strong gains came from Peyton Peabody (Spring Valley) and Mariah Bolden (Glenwood City Middle School).
Top overall marks from last week included Gabriel Nottling (Watertown Luther Prep) in the long jump at 21-1.5, Alexander Raymond (Randolph/Cambria-Friesland) in the high jump at 5-10, and a tie at 7-6 in the pole vault between Brecken Iverson (Boyceville Middle School) and James Michel (Deerfield/Cambridge).
On the girls side, Haley Mathison (Cadott MS) dominated the throws with a winning shot put of 37-5 and discus of 133-9, both standing as the top overall girls marks of the week. In the jumps, Lindsay Vander Galien (Randolph/Cambria-Friesland) led the long jump at 16-10.5 and triple jump at 35-8.5, while Brynleigh Plumer (Durand Middle School) cleared the highest mark in the high jump at 4-10. In the pole vault, Ryleigh Halverson (Deerfield/Cambridge) led the field at 7-5.
