Teams and individuals claimed titles across three divisions at the 2024 Boys & Girls State Cross Country Championships, held Saturday at The Ridges Golf Course.
In Division 1 boys, Stevens Point Area Senior High captured the team title for the third straight year and the 14th time overall, finishing with 77 points. Marquette took second with 129 points. Senior Manny Putz of Onalaska made history by winning his third individual state title with a time of 15:07.5, the fifth-best in state meet history. Putz also placed seventh in 2021. Senior Grady Lenn of De Pere was runner-up with a time of 15:09.2, building on his third-place finish last year.
Neenah claimed the Division 1 girls' team championship with a score of 57, securing its fourth state title after a runner-up finish last year. Wauwatosa East followed in second place with 123 points. Junior Ella Anschutz of Muskego defended her individual Division 1 title, finishing in 18:04.5, adding to her sixth-place finish as a freshman in 2022. Freshman Izzy Decabooter of Verona finished as runner-up with a time of 18:14.2.
University School of Milwaukee won its first-ever Division 2 girls' team title, finishing with 60 points, ahead of Bloomer's 80 points, which placed second for the second consecutive year. Junior Emmerson Drobac of Deerfield/Cambridge won the Division 2 girls' individual title with a state record-setting time of 17:38.9, beating the previous all-division record. Sophomore Ciara Hartman of Bloomer took second in 17:43.2, also surpassing the previous meet record.
Kohler, a two-time Division 3 team champion, moved up to Division 2 this season and captured the boys' team title with a five-runner score of 77 points. West Salem placed second with 114 points. Senior Jack Hefty from Whitewater earned the boys' individual Division 2 title with a 5K time of 15:46.5, improving on his 13th-place finish last year. Senior Owen Lencki of Waupaca followed as runner-up, clocking in at 15:51.6.
In the girls' Division 3 race, Kohler secured its first-ever state team title with a score of 95, narrowly edging out Aquinas, who finished three points behind with 98. Senior Mallory Kohn of Dodgeland claimed individual honors in Division 3, running the 5K in 18:08.4, marking the second-fastest time in division history. Sophomore Maggie Behler of Kohler took runner-up for the second year in a row, posting a time of 18:20.4, the third-fastest in Division 3 history.
Cedar Grove-Belgium claimed the boys' Division 3 team title, marking its second state title with a score of 98, improving from last year's third-place finish. Prentice/Rib Lake finished as runner-up with 126 points. Senior Declan Gregg of Aquinas won the Division 3 individual title with a time of 15:52.7, ranking sixth-best in Division 3 history. Senior Taylor Karcz of Crandon took second place, repeating his runner-up position from last year with a time of 15:59.0.
