Wisconsin Outdoors: April 13th- April 19th Top Performers and Breakthroughs
Wisconsin athletes competed across a full slate of meets from April 13-19, highlighted by strong showings at the M-Club Relays, Ozaukee Outdoor Opener, and MVC/Coulee Invitational. With additional performances from meets like the Brookfield East Girls Varsity Invite and national competition at the ASICS Carolina Distance Carnival, the week produced both top marks and a wave of key breakthroughs across the state.
Sprints & Hurdles
Nathan Thorn (Racine Horlick) delivered one of the biggest improvements of the week, slicing nearly two and a half seconds off his previous best to run 11.50 in the 100m at the Tremper JV Invite. The sophomore moved to #10 in the state among his class and finished 2nd in a massive 110-athlete field, signaling a major leap forward early in the season.
On the girls side, Malen Izaola (Cedarburg) made an even more dramatic jump in the 200m, dropping from 32.18 to 26.44 at the Ozaukee Outdoor Opener. The freshman now leads her class in the event and already sits inside the top 30 statewide.
At the MVC/Coulee Invitational, Myla Habelman (Tomah) put together a multi-event breakthrough, highlighted by a 13.20 100m - down from 13.77 last season. She added improvements in both the triple jump (30-5.75) and 300 hurdles (54.12), demonstrating her range while climbing into the top five among freshmen in the state.
Among the week's top established performers, Niyer Clayborn (Wisconsin Lutheran) reinforced his position as one of the state's elite hurdlers, winning the 110m hurdles in 13.69 at the West Allis Hale Mondo Invitational. The junior's PR now leads Wisconsin in his class.
Distance
Competing on a national stage, Lucas Tanner (DeForest) clocked 4:05.80 in the 1600m at the ASICS Carolina Distance Carnival, improving on his state championship PR and finishing 5th in a loaded field of over 800 athletes.
Meanwhile, Lauren McCalla (Menomonie) delivered a strong front-running effort in the 800m, winning in 2:14.04 against a deep 20-athlete field.
Jumps
Highlighting the week, Dylan Awve (Muskego) soared to a 6-6 clearance in the high jump, improving six inches and setting a new school record. The senior now ranks #3 in Wisconsin and won against a competitive 25-athlete field. He also chipped in a slight PR in the 300 hurdles (46.50), showing his all-around strength.
At the same meet, Cole Zielinski (Waukesha West) dominated the horizontal jumps, winning the long jump at 24-2.5 and the triple jump at 46-1. The triple jump mark was a PR and places him among the top juniors in the state.
On the girls side, Elise Schroeder (Arrowhead) cleared 13-0 in the pole vault to win a 20-athlete field at the M-Club Relays, one of the top marks in the state this season. Teammate Addison Pommerening (Arrowhead) also impressed, clearing a PR of 5-6 in the high jump to win against 23 competitors and solidify her standing as the top junior in Wisconsin.
Throws
Leading the way, Chris Marcell (Marathon) delivered a dominant double at the incredibly named "Holy Cow We're Hosting Invitational," winning the shot put (63-2) and discus (210-10) against large, competitive fields. Both marks stood atop deep entries, reinforcing his status as one of the premier throwers in the region.
Another major breakthrough came from Jackson Reeves (Homestead), who added nearly seven feet to his shot put PR with a 53-3.5 throw at the Ozaukee Outdoor Opener. The sophomore now ranks #2 among his class statewide and finished 2nd in a 33-athlete field.
Teammate Luka Ivancevic (Homestead) also had a strong showing, winning the shot put (58-11.75) and placing 2nd in the discus, contributing to a deep throwing contingent at the meet.
In the discus, Sylis Prince (Appleton West) posted a notable improvement, jumping from 123-3 to 139-5 to place 2nd in a 41-athlete field. He also improved significantly in the shot put, adding over five feet to reach 43-8.
On the girls side, Ayden Smith (New London) swept both throwing events at the New London Triangular, highlighted by a discus PR of 133-9-an improvement of over 16 feet from earlier this season.
Libbey Buchmann (Rhinelander) continued her steady progression, breaking a long-standing PR in the discus with a 135-1 throw while also placing 2nd in the shot put.
