Track and field records, like those of every sport,  were made to be broken. We all know that, it’s the ancient truth of all human athletic activity. But some records were made to stay in the books a whole lot longer than a bunch of others.

ITHACA – Alex Hatz shook his head in the kind of “aw shucks,” fashion. Not because he lost his race, he didn’t. Hatz just didn’t execute perfectly. He left it get too close. Well, too close for him.

SYRACUSE – You would think he’d be excited. You would think there would be some sort of celebration. A smile maybe. But Alex Hatz of Fayetteville-Manilus walked off the track, as calmly as he entered, with just a few nods to the people than were in awe of him in that moment.

The New York girls showed up the New York boys as the performances in the second half of the New York State Indoor Championships have been quite impressive with two US #1 performances and a freshmen national record. Lancaster's Melissa Kurzdorfer was the current US leader in the shot put and went ahead to improve her season best in the event at Cornell with a big throw of 48'2.25".  Kurdorfer, a junior, is now a three-time New York indoor state champion in the event. The girls distance races have been stellar today as well in Ithaca. Roslyn junior Emily Lipari, the current US leader in the 3K at 9:50, became the nation's fastest at 1500 meters as well with a 4:32.59 victory. 1500 runner-up Shelby Greany of Suffern was just three seconds off Lipari's US #1 time in the 3K as she kicked it in for a strong 9:53 win. A rising star is found at Colonie High School in freshmen Kyle Plante (pictured left by Tim Fulton) as she defeated a strong field in the 300 meter dash including previous US #3 performer Chamique Francis with a US #2 38.53 performance. More impressively, her time shattered the high school freshmen national record in the event. More... Since Nike Team Nationals started in 2004, no school has had the success Fayetteville-Manlius (NY) has shown. Four seperate NTN meets, four seperate top three finishes (2 boys, 2 girls). This year, F-M's girls team is ranked U.S. #1 in the MileSplit National CC Rankings and looks to make a run at their third straight national championship. Why is this squad so successful? What's their magic? MileSplit national editor Scott Bush traveled out to New York to see for himself, and the results were surprising.

Every year the Northeast puts out some incredible distance talent, but this fall may be the greatest collection of distance talent seen in some time. Between Doug Smith, Brett Johnson and Solomon Haile, the boys have strong front runners, while the girls follow the lead of Foot Locker veterans Emily Lipari, Emily Jones and Shelby Greany. Come late-November and early-December the Northeast may be looking at national champions at Nike Cross Nationals and Foot Locker Nationals.
